Do you want to know what my new favourite hobby is? I think you’ll be suitably impressed.
My new favourite hobby is getting into bed super early with a mug of hot tea and my laptop tuned into Netflix. Rock n roll, eh? Gone are the days of going to the pub night after night, now I get my kicks with a hot drink and Netflix binge.
The only thing I hate about my new found hobby is trying to find something to watch. It stresses me out. I hate seeing my chill time being eaten away through searching for something good to watch. Which precisely why I decided that my good deed of the day would be to share my favourite shows available on Netflix right now.
A few friends of mine recommended Love to me and it didn’t disappoint. Expect easy viewing and an indie storyline about 20 somethings awkwardly navigating their way through life and love.
We started watching Whitechapel after getting back from Wales on Sunday night and have been powering our way through since. I’m hooked. It’s a British drama series about London detectives investigating murders, involving replicated historical crimes. It’s gripping viewing and I love the dynamics between the characters.
The Santa Clarita Diet
I feel like I should preface this by saying that The Santa Clarita Diet is completely ridiculous, but that is totally it’s charm. For the first few minutes I was left wondering what the hell I was watching, but after one episode I loved it. Expect flesh eating zombies, but way less gore than you’d see on The Waking Dead.
If you haven’t already watched Peaky Blinders, then you don’t know what you’re missing. The storylines are strong, the characters interesting and the production super high quality. Alongside some strong female characters, there’s also Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy. The latter being reason enough for me to watch!
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this film. I only agreed to watch it because Chris wanted to, but I am pleased I did. Captain Phillips is a biographical survival thriller film, starring Tom Hanks. The film is inspired by a true story about a hijacking of a ship and is very gripping.
Him & Her
Him & Here is a British sitcom, following the lives of a lazy twenty-something couple and their friends. It’s cringeworthy in places, but definitely funny and very easy to watch. I think Chris and I may have a couple more series of this to catch up on, which make me very happy!
This is England 90
This is England 90 is a gritty British drama series, directed by Shane Meadows and is a final chapter in the This is England series. Do not expect a lighthearted watch, but it is bloody good.
Luther is a British crime drama, starring Idris Elba as Luther, a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can’t always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions. There are a few super gory scenes, but on the whole it’s easy viewing.
On paper, this show sounds pretty lame. The story revolves around an odd ball detective who sees dead people. No, really. One of which is his co-worker, whom wonders around talking to him with half her head missing. It sounds ridiculous, but it’s actually really good.
If you haven’t heard of Breaking Bad, where have you been? This show was a huge hit and it’s not hard to see why. It has the right balance of humour, suspense and wackiness, as well as top notch acting. It takes a couple of episodes to get into the swing of things, but it’s well worth sticking with. Once it’s got you, you’re hooked. A bit like a drug really …
Making a Murderer
Making a Murderer is a documentary that will leave you seriously questioning the American judicial system.
Gone girl is a film based on a New York Times best seller that unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. What exactly happened to Nick Dunne’s missing wife? Is their marriage as happy as it at first appears?
I have to admit that the first few times I watched this, I really wasn’t feeling it. I have this thing with violence, sometimes I can stomach it, others I can’t. Once I got over the whole brutality thing, I began to enjoy this. I have a soft spot for Martin Freeman, not in a phwoah (did I really just type that?!) way, but in an ‘oh aren’t you sweet way’. I’m not sure my feelings towards him apply can apply to this program, the character he plays is very much outside his usual stereotype.
Better Call Saul
If you loved breaking bad, then you will love following Saul through his journey before Breaking Bad. It turns out he’s always been a bit of a loser. Who’d have guessed?
The Fundamentals of Caring
I loved this film! I watched it on my own because Chris decided he didn’t like the look of it, but after watching, I had to make him watch it too. It’s an indie style film about hope and friendship, but not too slow paced or pretentious.
So there you have it, my breakdown on must-sees on Netflix right now. Go pencil off a weekend, stock up on popcorn and cosy up with your laptop in bed. You wont regret it.
